Student support
Your tutor
All full-time students have a tutor who is responsible for your academic and social welfare and will help you review your progress and your career thinking. We pay particular attention to target setting as well as records of punctuality and attendance and the completion of set work. Your tutor will also ensure your timetable and examination entries are discussed individually with you.
Student Services
The Student Services Centre is normally open from 8.00 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. and provides a wide variety of information and guidance to support you throughout your time at college. The Student Services team can provide information about financial support, careers, travel to and from college and the college counselling service. The student helpdesk is also the point of contact if you are going to miss a class or need to sign out of college due to illness.
Supporting your learning
Students have different learning needs and you may need help at some stage to achieve your potential. The study skills team is available to help any student make the most of their time in college. The team offers help with college work, including study skills, course work, numeracy, English as a second language and dyslexia. For more information click here.
Students with particular needs
The college co-ordinates assistance for students with disabilities or medical needs. We have access to an educational psychologist who can provide assessments of students’ needs and make appropriate recommendations. The college publishes a disability statement, which is available on request. If you need to use a wheelchair there is excellent access to all parts of the college.
Careers
We have excellent facilities and can provide you with a wide range of literature, computer software and up-to-date information to support your career planning. You will have access to an independent career counselling service provided by Connexions careers advisers who visit regularly and work with college staff. The service provides a framework to help you sort out your next step, whether this is employment, training, further or higher education.
We provide opportunities for work experience and work shadowing as well as practical preparation for making applications and being interviewed.
Higher education
Help is available with higher education applications as well as reviewing career plans following the publication of examination results. A significant number of students attend higher education institutions throughout the United Kingdom. Some students prefer to study for degrees locally and we have established strong links with neighbouring universities.
Partnership with parents
Parents of new students transferring from secondary schools are invited to the college early in the academic year in order to gain information at first hand about college procedures and regulations. Reports on progress, attendance and work completed are sent home to parents of students aged 16-18 each term.
Consultation Evenings are held in each college year, so parents of students aged 16 to 18 can share in the review of progress that each student has with subject teachers and tutor.
If parents wish to visit the college or consult staff at other times they should telephone for an appointment. If the matter is very urgent every effort will be made for the principal or a senior member of staff to be available immediately.
