Student wins national Radio 1 Teen Award

15/11/2011

Caring for her family and community is all in a day’s work for student Pippa Haines. So when she took a call from BBC Radio 1 telling her she had won a national teen award recognising her hard work, she was left speechless.

17-year-old Pippa is currently studying BTEC Public Services and A level Law at Taunton’s College alongside being a full time carer to her Mum, sister and nephew. The Radio 1 Teen Awards wanted to give recognition to young people who are doing outstanding things with their lives. Pippa was nominated for the award by her Mum, and she beat off thousands of other hopefuls to win the teen hero award.

The celebrity panel of judges included Vernon Kaye, Aled Jones and singer Pixie Lott who spent hours choosing three winners from hundreds of applications. Pippa attended the ceremony at London’s Wembley Arena, where she met stars like Olly Murs, One Direction and Professor Green. Radio presenter Fearne Cotton even complimented Pippa on her dress. Pippa was even lucky enough to have a personalised video message from Britney Spears when she went on stage in front of an audience of 8,000 to collect her trophy. She said: ‘things like this don’t happen to me, winning the award made me feel so special.’ Pippa is hoping to study Law at university when she graduates from Taunton’s.

Outside of college Pippa regularly attends army cadets, has worked for Age UK in Portswood and at ‘Buddies’ which is an after school club in Chandlers Ford. Pippa’s next venture will be the Take It On campaign which helps young people achieve their potential, and is backed by the BBC.
