Interfaith Week

01/12/2011

Over 100 students at Taunton’s College had the opportunity to ask questions to members of the Southampton Council of Faiths as part of Interfaith Week.

The aim of the event was to encourage young people to become actively involved in exploring religion and culture.

Interface and Diversity Coordinator Naheed Brora organised the event as a way of getting the city’s youth engaged on interfaith issues for the future. She said: ‘I had a vision of an event run by young people for young people of different faiths.

The representatives at the debate involved a wide range of delegates from religions including Hindu, Jewish, Buddhist, Muslim and Christian. The topics debated ranged from an appreciation of customs which included traditional Muslim dress to different faiths beliefs on sexuality.

Taunton’s also had a visit from the Bishop of Southampton, a retired Abbot from Alton Abbey and a St James Youth Worker.

Assistant Principal Glenda Gardiner said: ‘We are exploring the option of chaplaincy to support students regarding issues of faith and we are very excited about this.’
