Concerts, Choirs and the Community

14/12/2011

The autumn term has seen the blooming of musical and performing arts talent at Taunton’s. So far there has been a concert half way through the term which showcased the college choir, pops choir, community choir and big band.

The contemporary musicians have already had their first two rock and pop gigs at Southampton Solent University's student union and the department have just secured two nights of opera at The Nuffield theatre.

The college choir and orchestra also got festive with the Upper Shirley Learning Community Trust at St James Park for the launch event. Nine Southampton schools took part, including Upper Shirley High, Shirley Juniors and Hollybrook Juniors.

A level Music students had the opportunity to see Welsh National Opera Don Giovanni at The Mayflower, and The Choral Concert rounded off 2011 at Thornden Hall.

But perhaps the biggest announcement is the college’s end of year production. The BTEC National Diploma in Performing Arts students will be performing We Will Rock You at The Berry Theatre in Hedge End in May 2012. This will be the college’s fifth major production in recent years, following the sell-out shows of Little Shop of Horrors in 2010 and Hairspray in 2011. Rehearsals are well underway for what is sure to be a staged spectacular.

Paul Swindale, Learning Area Manager for Music and Performing Arts said: "the performing arts department is a thriving place for students to experience music, drama and dance in professional environments. We take pride in the performances of our students and are pleased to share them with our local community."
