Academy of Sport - Official opening

Tuesday 10 December 2002 Guest of Honour: Lawrie McMenemy

Taunton’s Academy of Sport was officially opened by Lawrie McMenemy on the evening of Tuesday 10 December 2002. The former Saints boss praised the academy as a powerful initiative for gifted young sportsmen and women from the Southampton area. It will allow them to pursue excellence in their chosen sport while gaining a qualification that can lead to higher education or a career.

Guests were treated to an aerial display by members of the successful trampoline team, including students who have competed at national level. Director of Sport at Taunton’s, Howard Tear, was quick to remind the audience that many other members of the academy teams are competing at an equally high level, albeit with their feet mostly on the ground.

The Academy of Sport’s initial focus is on football, netball, cricket, basketball, rugby and trampolining, and the college has secured the support of partner organisations which include Southampton Football Club and Hampshire Cricket Club.

“High quality coaching is provided by national level coaches and opportunities open to students may even include sporting scholarships to universities at home and in the United States,” adds Howard Tear.
