Summary

These courses are aimed at native speakers of Polish who will study AS level in Year 1 and A level in Year 2.

Requirements

You will need to speak and write Polish fluently. A high grade in GCSE Polish is helpful, but not essential.

Course Content

Unit 1
The paper consists of three sections:

  • A passage of authentic printed material in Polish, on which a variety of questions will be set which will require answers in Polish.
  • A passage in Polish for translation into English.
  • A short, printed stimulus in Polish, requiring a letter, report or article to be written as a response in Polish.

The general topics which will be covered are inter-related and will include reference to Polish society and culture. They include:

Day to day matters
Media, transport, food and drink, health and fitness, drugs, alcohol, smoking, diets, national dishes.

Society
Family life, marriage, single parents, religion, value of the Church, customs and traditions, moral values,  conflict at home, free-time activities, arts, clubs, sport, social issues, crime, unemployment, law and order, rights and responsibilities, racism.

Environment and citizenship
Environmental issues, pollution, energy, recycling, urban and rural life, work, science, IT revolution, crime and punishment, values of society.

Working world
Education and training, equal opportunities, Polish system of education, employment and unemployment, value of languages, unions, commerce and industry, Poland’s entry to the EU.

International context
Travel and tourism, aspects of life and culture of foreign countries, the developing world, sharing of world riches, charity work.

Unit 2
The paper consists of three sections:

  • A passage of authentic printed material in Polish, on which a variety of questions will be set which will require answers in Polish.
  • A passage in English for translation into Polish.
  • Two essays in Polish on literary and non-literary topics.

The general topics are the same as for AS level. There are four additional topics which could be studied. The literary ones are:

  • The fight for independence as a theme in Polish literature
  • Moral and social issues as presented in Polish drama      

There is a choice of books to study. The non-literary topics are:

  • Poland and the Poles during World War II
  • The films of Andrzej Wajda – Popiół i Diament and Człowiek z Marmuru.

What else do I need to know?

AS level Polish classes run on Tuesdays between 4pm - 5pm and A level Polish classes run on Thursdays from 4pm - 5pm.
