Summary
This is a course which looks at how the English Legal System works and areas of law such as Criminal Law.
Requirements
You will need:
At least five GCSEs at grade C or above to include English Language. You do not need to have studied Law before.
Course Content
In Year 1 you will study units 1 and 2 for an AS level. In Year 2 you will take units 3 and 4 to complete the full A level.
Unit 1: Law Making and the Legal System
You will study the English legal system, looking at how the civil and criminal courts operate. This will involve a study of the jury and magistrates. You will also study how law is made, including statute law, how statute is interpreted and a study of delegated legislation.

Unit 2: The Concept of Liability
This will include a study of the basic principles of criminal law including offences against the person and sentencing. It will also include an introduction to tort, looking at negligence and compensation.

Unit 3: Criminal Law
This will be a study of Criminal law. You will study non-fatal offences against the person such as grievous bodily harm. You will study murder, manslaughter and the defences available.

Unit 4: Tort and Concepts of Law
This will involve a study of tort looking at negligence, occupier’s liability, nuisance and defences. There is also a study of the concepts of law such as law and morals, law and justice and the extent to which judges make law.

What else do I need to know?
The main study methods include discussion-based lessons, group work and group presentations. You will need to keep up to date by reading newspaper articles and law journals provided. There are visits to the local courts.
Law combines well with many different subjects.
This course can be a route into a legal career such as a solicitor, barrister, legal executive, or other careers such as the police, civil service and teaching.
